& Whey eNews Winter July 2010
"There's
nothing like ... Alexandrina Cheese Company"
WELCOME
Hi all,
Another season “bites-the-dust”, and glorious
winter is officially here! Talking about dust, autumn surely dragged on
here on the southern Fleurieu Peninsula with beautiful warm days, cold
jack-frost nights and not much of the wet stuff. Talking about the wet
stuff, we South Australians’ love to call this rain, and we have
finally seen the beginning of a good growing season. In May, the clouds
certainly opened with at least two wild and wet storms, dropping plenty
of puddles. The up-side, has been the growth of the green grass and the
jersey cows continue to munch on this nutritious fodder.
In mid June, the team at Alexandrina Cheese
Company were again able to wave the Australian flag at the second
biannual World Jersey Cheese Awards on Jersey Island, United Kingdom.
The McCaul Family are delighted to announce receiving three prizes from
the prestigious World’s Best Jersey Cheese 2010; hence, we are madly
waving the Australian flag, for the 2nd time!! Read on for all the
results of the World Jersey Cheese Awards. Please click below to read
the News Flash.
In late June, the Retail & Tourism team at
Alexandrina Cheese Company received another big gong! This time, a well
deserved tourism award. The team were able to take away the Overall
Winner of Tourism Attractions at the Fleurieu Peninsula Tourism Awards!
"It is just wonderful to be recognized as a leader among some of the
strongest tourism operators in the region." Please click below to read
the News Flash – Top of Tourism Attractions!
The most exciting buzz around Alexandrina Cheese
Company, is usually on the third Sunday of the month. We are joined by
four amazing women who make up The Ryebuck Sheila’s. Hence, tables fill
up fast for Fiddles on the Farm, and the session brings big smiles to
new and old folk lovers alike. For winter, the Alexandrina culinary team
are serving Soup on Sunday.
Enjoy singing your own tune of freshness this
winter,
With a cheesey grin, Rebekah McCaul

Recipe of the Season
By
chance a recipe swap in Strathalbyn...

I met Maisie in Strathalbyn last week, and I have known
her lovely daughter Jane (Cafe 11 adjoins The Olde Market Shed,
Strathalbyn / Cafe 11 Jane Henderson T 8536 3811) for a number of years.
While chatting to Jane and Maisie, Maisie had mentioned
our Whisky Tasting which we hosted a few weeks back. Maisie suggested
this Grown-up Bread and Butter Pudding recipe as an inspiration to a
good ole dram of whisky! The fruit in this recipe is soaked in whisky
and we encourage the cook to sip on a glass of whisky while cooking.
Yes, anything goes, especially if you are trying to keep warm this
winter! Another plus, this uses half a pint of each Alexandrina full
cream jersey milk and pure jersey cream! Maisie suggested that old
fashioned food is always good and simple . I would have to agree with
her. She also suggests that our traditional spices (mace, nutmeg,
cinnamon and cloves) are still the best.
Recipe
of the Season -
Maisie's Grown-up Bread and Butter
Pudding
Ingredients
- 125 g cinnamon butter
- Stale bread , or stale fruit bread or brioche (approx 5-6
slices)
- 6-7oz. (180-200g) mixed dried fruit soaked in whisky
- 3 eggs
- 1/2 pint (~250ml) Alexandrina full cream jersey milk
- 1/2 pint (~250ml) Alexandrina pure jersey cream
- Grated lemon rind
- A good measure whisky
- 2oz. (60g) caster sugar
- A scrape of fresh nutmeg (optional) or mace
Maisie does suggest mixing 1 tablespoon of cinnamon into
the butter to make an infused Cinnamon Butter
Method
Butter an ovenproof dish with some of the cinnamon
butter, spread the bread with the remaining butter, taking it right to
the edge, (remove crusts if desired) and cut into neat triangles. Take
the fruit out of the whisky it has been soaking in. Place the triangles
neatly in the dish, peak uppermost, and sprinkle the fruit in between
the slices evenly. Beat the eggs, cream, Alexandrina full cream jersey
milk and lemon rind together, adding any remaining whisky plus a good
measure more (!), then add the sugar (and nutmeg if desired). Pour
mixture over the bread and fruit. Sprinkle a little more sugar over the
peaks and bake in a pre-heated oven 350F or Mark4 for about 30 minutes.
It should look crisp and golden.
A note from Maisie, June 2010;
Isn't this recipe quaint, I'm not sure about the neat and even bit but
I will certainly give it a try. I have a beautiful little recipe book
-Favourite Recipes with Scotch Whisky which I will pop over and show
you one day. It was very nice meeting you Rebekah and congratulations
once more on you success with the cheeses. Best wishes for more medals,
Maisie Henderson Port Elliott.
